Atomic / Molecular Layer Deposition of Cerium (III) Hybrid Thin Films using Rigid Organic Precursors
Within the framework of the EU-ITN-HYCOAT (H2020) project, new Ce-based hybrid thin films were fabricated using ALD/MLD approach. The collaboration included Prof. Maarit Karppinen’s group from Aalto University, Finland and Prof. Michael Nolan’s group from Tyndall National Lab, Ireland.
Cerium is very interesting among rare-earth elements owing to its unique tendency to change its oxidation states between +3 and +4.
The combination of a Ce-tris-guanidinate precursor with organic co-reactants yielded of cerium-terephthalate and cerium-hydroquinone hybrid thin films using ALD/MLD.
DFT calculations done at Tyndall National Institute provided interesting insights about the feasibility of the reaction and the possible oxidation state of cerium which was verified experimentally as well.
